summer holiday travel

We are loading up the truck with the kids to take off to the lake shortly. It’s a bit of a drive and I have a toddler that will ask me 100 times if ‘we are there yet’.

I am looking for any tips to keep us all happy in the car while we log some hot hours in the car on our way to (and from) the lake.

Question of the week: How do you keep kids entertained during summer holiday travel?

  1. Stephanie says:

I have sooo many things to entertain my kids, because they are usually the only kids on our trips.

For a long drive/flight: mileage bags. Paper bags that you let the kids decorate before the trip and you put the miles on – 100km, 250km, etc. I put a small snack and toy in each. Use a map and plan to hand bags out close to pit stops so they can have a drink too.

For places we get to explore: Swiss army notebook. I use a 3 ring zipper binder, and include a few page protectors, large envelopes, picture album pockets, paper and pencils. That way the kids have a special place to keep all their trinkets they collect, and if it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t come home.

Then we also have a suitcase (small one) that is filled with paper, dot to dots, pencil crayons (wax will melt if left in the car), stencil books, word searches, crayon rubbing kit, paper bag puppets, and a few coloring books. Along with the staples of a jump rope, jacks, and a beach ball.

They still get bored from time to time, but the we just go hunting for some new bug or frog.
