Take the Pledge to Leave the Phone Alone While Driving

Imagine driving half a football field blindfolded. Believe it or not, taking your eyes off the road for even three seconds to take a cell phone call or send a text message is like driving 50 metres with your eyes closed. A lot can happen on a highway in three seconds.
Leave the Phone Alone while driving is a pledge that is part of a national public awareness campaign organized by the Canadian Council Motor Transport Association to inform drivers about the dangers of distracted driving and to increase driver safety. By visiting www.leavethephonealone.ca you can join the rest of Canada by taking the pledge and help make Canada’s roads the safest in the world.
Even though every province in Canada has laws in place to make it illegal to use a hand held device while driving (as of September 1, 2011), some drivers are still doing it. Remember, texting and/or talking on a hand-held cell phone while driving is dangerous and illegal in most provinces. In fact, you could face a fine of $150 to $400 and up to four demerit points in some provinces. Depending on the province, the consequences could include fines, demerit points and possible jail time.

According to research, drivers who use hand held devices to call are four times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves and their passengers. The risk associated with texting while driving is even greater.
Here are some tips to lower your distractibility while driving:

  • Never talk or text on your cell phone.
  • Before you drive, turn off your phone.
  • Use a navigation system responsibly.
  • Never channel surf, eat, drink, or comb your hair.
  • Set a good example for your friends and family.
  • Drive defensively. Even if you’re not distracted, others may be.

Talk to your friends and families about taking action to “give up the habit”, by taking the “Leave the Phone Alone” pledge. For more information please visit www.leavethephonealone.ca .
