Milkies [closed]

Ok, I am just going to say this and get it out in the open. I am embarrassed over let down during nursing. Phew, I got it out there. I love nursing my little ones. I love holding them, rocking and bonding with them as we have our special quiet time.

I do NOT like holding wash cloths up against me or having cold, wet nursing pads as I nurse. I am my most embarrassed when nursing in public and leaking through my nursing pads! I just can’t get over it.

This year, most moms I know are expecting or have had a baby and, of course, nursing comes up. It is a hot topic. Pumping, supply, milk flow… each mom has their own unique challenges at some point.

There seems to be one common thread. None of us want to waste any of that precious milk that our little ones need.

This is where Helen of Milkies comes in. She has created the Milk Saver.
Simply slip the milk-saver into your bra cup before nursing and allow it to collect any milk that is leaked when your milk lets down.

I had a new mom test the product to get her thoughts. Let’s just say, the amount of milk she has saved and has in storage for her little on is amazing!
The milk-saver contains no BPA or phthalates and can be washed in the dishwasher!

She simply leaves the milk-saver in it’s protective case until she is ready to nurse and slides it into her nursing bra while she nurses on the other side.

“It is comfortable, easy and I don’t have to pump!”, she stated.

I was curious how much milk per day she was able to store from just nursing.
She said anywhere from 3 – 6 oz a day!!

The Inspiration

I love being a nurse. My favorite part of the job is patient education. I wanted to find a way to bring a positive breastfeeding message to as many moms as possible. I had some breastfeeding challenges with my first son. I know it’s tough at times and how rewarding it is to overcome the challenges. Giving moms the knowledge and tools to be successful is my inspiration every day- I love it! And of course my kids- I love to be with them.

What makes your product unique/different?

The Milk-Saver collects breast milk from the non-nursing side during a breastfeeding session. Moms can get so much more milk stored when they use a Milk-Saver. When I nursed my first son I leaked all over, I was always wet! And I was always worried about having enough milk stored for my husband to feed when I was at work. When I had my second, I had a Milk-Saver. I never had to resort to formula and had so much milk I donated over 220 ounces to a milk bank.

What keeps you motivated?

Helping other moms. I am so in love with my boys and I know I have that feeling in common with every parent on earth! I know other moms feel the same way about their kids and want the best for them, breastfeeding is a great way to give kids a healthy start.

If you could have one super-hero power, what would it be?

I’d want to fly. My boys would love that and we would spend less time
driving-boring!

What is the most rewarding thing about running your own business?

Calling the shots. My mom is my business partner, she is also a nurse. We have chosen to focus on education and environmental responsibility. We really want to make the world a better place and we don’t need to be so profit driven because we make the decisions.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

There will be a Milk-Saver in every home!

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned as a working mom {so
far}?

Always set a good example. My kids see me working hard everyday, physically and mentally. I want them to know how to enjoy working and nothing worth doing is easy. They also help me however they can. If you order a Milk-Saver, the shipping box was handled by one of my boys. They stack the boxes near the door to be picked up by our mail carrier. We all work together. I love it!

I wish I had these when I was nursing.  I had one side produce much more than the other and when trying to nurse on the “poor” side I would leak a ton on the “good” one.I am entering here (and will on Facebook too) to share this idea with other moms I work with who may be having similar issues.

  18. What a great idea! I could have used these while nursing my son when he was younger (the let down reflex isn’t a problem any more). I can only imagine the amount of milk I would have collected! Anyway, baby #2 is on the way and I could definitely make use of a milk saver.
