When I first saw Karen’s work – I knew I had found a photographer for my girls birthday shots. I was very nervous about an in-home photo shot but with two little ones, we have done the studio sessions and usually leave with dirty diapers, crying kids and photos that don’t always look like ‘us
Karen came to our home and my girls were instantly drawn to her and her goodie basket of accessories and could not wait to get their pictures done. No tears, no stress and we got AMAZING photos
She simply let us be ‘us’ and make us (and our home) look amazing. They are shots that captured my little ones exactly how they are in this moment in their lives. A true treasure for us to have forever.

The Inspiration
When I realized how much I LOVED capturing other people’s babies, children and families and special moments as much as my own! I always loved taking photos and once my own children were born the real obsession began!
As time ticked away and I learned more about the technical aspect of photography, my skills steadily improved and people started asking me to photograph their babies and children and it kind of snowballed from there!
One day I realized that perhaps I actually could do this as my “JOB”! …. like ALL THE TIME! Rock Star was out, so this is the next best thing!
What makes your product unique/different?
I’m not quite sure I can answer that myself! I think that would be a question more suited for some of my amazing clients! I guess one thing that makes my work unique is that the creative process does not begin when I meet the client and start shooting. Especially with newborns, babies and children. The creative process begins when the shoot is booked and ends when the images are in the hands of my clients. I try to personalize each shoot by trying not to do the exact same thing twice. I love spontaneity as well and shooting on location allows for me to take the creative process even further and use the environment to create stunning imagery. I strive to always be learning something new and to try new things so as to better myself for my clients!
What keeps you motivated?
My 3 kids! And the knowledge that the harder I work at this, the better the chances that I will be running not only a successful business but a steadfast one, able to make my own schedule and be home for my children as they grow into big people ;p Most importantly though, I want to teach my kids that no matter where you are at in life, if you are not happy with what you are doing, you can change it. You CAN do what you are absolutely passionate about and make a living doing it! I think it is so important for kids to know that… Telling them they can be anything they want to be is fantastic… SHOWING them by example is priceless…
If you could have one super-hero power, what would it be?
The power to create multiple super powers… Yes, I am the one that wishes for more wishes… ;p
But seriously?! SUPER SPEED! So I could accomplish everything I need to in a day, in mere minutes, so I can just hang out and play and not always feel like there is always something else to do! My mind is always racing away somewhere!
What is the most rewarding thing about running your own business?
How happy my clients are when they receive their photos! … Making people cry is actually a huge plus in this business! 🙂
I love meeting new people and in this business I am meeting new people all the time. I love being allowed the opportunity to “peek in” on my clients lives and experience their most precious moments with them for a moment. To capture those moments that they will look back on throughout their lifetime and pass on through generations. There is something so magical about that and it is unbelievably rewarding to know I had a small hand in that… One day Mr. Adorable Newborn here, his great- grandson will be looking at the photos that I took of him when he was first born 🙂
I love being my own boss… and I am always learning something new about the industry, the craft and about myself and my abilities as a business owner and as a human being.
Where do you see your business in 5 years?
Having only been at this a few years I am still learning about my strengths and weaknesses… In 5 years from new I hope to be specializing in a couple of fields (newborns being one of them) and become the go-to girl for newborns and babies in Saskatoon (or even all of the province?).
I also hope to be working out of my beautiful natural light studio on our acreage ( that we WILL have within 5 years…positive thinking will get you everywhere!).
What is the most valuable lesson you have learned as a working mom {so far}?
I am still learning how to manage my time more efficiently and prioritize… I have also learned that it is okay to make mistakes… (as a mom and as a business owner) as long as you learn from them!
