Moxie Trades [closed]

This weekend, I helped setup a new park in my home town. I rocked out my new safety glasses from moxies trades all weekend and loved them!

They are the first set of safety glasses that fit my little girl face and feel great. I also purchased a pair of ‘Bobbi’ work shoes and wore them while pouring cement, lifting park slides and using the cool power tools the rep brought and they stood up to anything I threw at them and best of all – my pregnant puffy feet felt great.

It’s important to set an example for those around that safety is important, particularly all those DIY Divas out there who are also mamas with little ones eyeing up and copying their every move. So when revving up for at home reno projects this spring, remember: safety [gear] first when undertaking a DIY project or embarking on the weekend warrior construction bandwagon!

Moxie trades is giving away a set of your own safety glasses and a pink hard hat (man I WISH I would have had that on site) to one lucky SaskatoonMoms.com member. Leave a comment letting us know how you’d put them to the test!

The Inspiration

I started this business because I had to buy a pair of men’s work boots. They didn’t fit great and they were ugly. After understanding the market from some very basic research in Industry Canada, I realized that there was a gap in the market. (not a niche)

What makes your product unique/different?

Our products are the best in quality and are made to fit the shape of a woman’s foot. With our strong branding, they also provide a unique statement. Moxie Trades is best known for Betsy, our pink work boot but our company name means something. The definition of moxie is the ability to face fear with spirit and courage. The women I know have moxie. For those women that don’t have moxie, I dare them to find it.

What keeps you motivated?

There are two thoughts on what motivates me. First is the life that I want to provide my children. I am able to build this business from my home and around my kids’ schedules. We do not have a nanny and my family shares the responsibilities of raising our kids. My kids giggle in their sleep so I know we’re good!
The other reason I can maintain super-motivation is because of my customers. My business has never been about work boots, it’s always about the women who wear them. These women are spectacular and inspire me daily.

If you could have one super-hero power, what would it be?

In our small way, my family has been able to give back, either by helping an old neighbour get down the stairs or by writing a cheque. I often think… there is rich, there is wealthy and then there is philanthropy. Philanthropy status is in my future. I look forward to the day that I am able to give away time and money generously to make the world a better place. I am looking forward to the day that I can take my kids to a country in need where we build a home for a family. I kind of think philanthropy is a pretty cool power. I could say “time” but that’s expected and boring and something we all want more of.

What is the most rewarding thing about running your own business?

As an entrepreneur, I started with an idea and a vision and a lot of naiivity. I love thinking, dreaming and putting these thoughts in motion. It is truly rewarding to put a dream into reality and have others jump on board. I am never bored and the “b” word is not allowed to be used by anyone who knows me. I also don’t like the “f” word (fine.) What does that mean anyway?
I am stretched emotionally and intellectually every day. I am scared and I do it anyway. I also get to laugh at the ridiculous things I have tried and failed at. I think the most rewarding thing is the journey. I get to live my philosophy that I wrote about in a book to my kids called “With Love.” I dream big, think the impossible and love passionately.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

We are already in 300 retail outlets in North America. I would like to see that get to 2500 outlets and would like to have distributors in Europe and Australia.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned as a working mom {so far}?

I have learned what my non-negotiables are in terms of my hours and stress level. I have learned this through the sacrifices my husband, kids and I have had to make. In my fourth year of business, I discovered the golden secret. I got it, I figured out how to run a successful company and more importantly how to be happy every day. We wake up happy, we have dinner together every night and we are all proud of what we accomplish

  1. Michelle says:

my husband is always making me wear his ugly safety glasses!! Would love to win a pink pair.

  2. As a newly single mom, this stuff would come in very handy.

  3. Completely inspired by your story! Love knowing there are work boots for women, I used to help my husband in our business and never had the proper footwear that was comfy and looked good!

    • I do most of the building projects around our house, and its always with the help of my kids (age 4,2, & 2mo). They help me draw the plans, buy the materials & build the item . Last summer we built a giant planter and picnic bench. I just started drawing up the plans for new back door stairs & would be able to put the prize to work asap .Thanks, Lisa
