I met Cathy during my last pregnancy.  I am so glad I got an opportunity to sit in on her workshop as she discussed why we eat what we eat, when, how does it make us feel and what grabbed my ear; what food habits am I passing on to my children?

Cathy is warm, easy to talk to and best of all, I never felt judged for my responses during her workshop.

Cathy’s workshop is not a diet program. It is more of a habit program. Cathy helps you think more about why you are eating what your eating and is it giving you the results you want.  I am using her tips as I take on the task of trying to get back to my pre-baby shape. Sleep deprived, emotional and at home with the kids – I am finding that I am not eating what I should, when I should. Thanks to Cathy’s worksheet, I can work at changing that!

The Inspiration

I have been a Registered Dietitian for 15 years and through various job positions have been involved in  (and very interested in) helping clients who struggle with weight issues. I decided to open my own private practice and focus on this area of practice specifically: weight management.

What makes your product unique/different?

Most weight loss programs promise a quick and painless fix with little work involved on the part of the client. I don’t make that promise because it does not work in the long run. My approach is not painless or easy but if people stick to it, they will have long term success at losing weight and keeping it off. This does not make my service nearly as popular as quick fixes!  I think that eventually when people try the quick fixes long enough and they keep regaining the weight, that they’re  eventually ready to try the longer (and permanent solution) route with me!

I also use a cognitive behavioural program to assist clients with understanding their problematic eating behaviours which goes a long way towards helping them achieve their weight loss goals. The program is Called Craving Change™ and is an important and unique tool I use to help clients achieve their goals.

What keeps you motivated?

Even though I am a very little guy within the huge multi billion dollar weight loss industry, knowing that I offer a service/product that has value and knowing that I won’t sell something to clients that doesn’t work just to make a buck is very motivating.  I also find it very motivating to continually search out the newest research and the best tools and client resources to improve my service.

If you could have one super-hero power, what would it be?

I will pick speed (like Dash in The Incredibles). So many ‘superpowers’ to choose from, it is difficult! But just imagine how much more you could accomplish in a day with that kind of speed!

What is the most rewarding thing about running your own business?

Setting my own hours and having the flexibility to work my hours around my family and other priorities and still have a balanced life. Also, what is rewarding is when clients experience that ‘aha’ moment when they understand that they don’t have to diet and that this is not about deprivation but about re establishing a positive relationship with food and eating that is the long term key to maintaining a healthy weight.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned as a working mom {so far}?

I have been very fortunate to have been able to choose to work part time over the years when my kids were small and I find that this is a good balance (when you have the choice!). Motherhood is a great privilege but one day the kids will be grown and need me less and I want to ensure I have other interests and passions that I have kept up with. I also think it’s great for our kids to see us working in an area we love and are passionate about and are trying to make a difference in, whether it is paid work or volunteer work.
